CARE:

  • Light
Place your olive tree in a spot that gets at least six hours of direct sunlight a day, such as a south-facing window. If there isn't enough natural light, you can use a full-spectrum grow light for 10–12 hours a day. Keep the leaves away from window glass to prevent them from burning.
  • Water
Olive trees need moist, well-drained soil, but they can be sensitive to overwatering. You can use a moisture meter to help you gauge the soil's moisture level. When the top inch of soil is dry, water slowly and deeply until water trickles out of the drainage holes. If your tree starts to look pale or drop leaves, it might be underwatered or overwatered.
  • Humidity
Olive trees can tolerate dry air and low to moderate humidity levels, so they probably won't need additional humidity in your home. However, you can keep your tree away from heat vents and radiators to prevent it from drying out.
  • Temperature
Olive trees grow best in rooms that are between 65–80°F.
  • Pruning
Prune the growing tips to keep the tree bushy and to prevent it from outgrowing its space. You can also prune out some branches to allow more light and air to reach the foliage.
  • Fertilizing
You can feed your olive tree year-round with plant food. During the growing months, you can use a citrus fertilizer or a universal fertilizer that contains nitrogen and potassium.
  • Pests
Indoor olive trees can be susceptible to scale, so you can occasionally spray them with a misting bottle.
  • Repotting
To extend the life of your potted olive tree, you can try root pruning. This involves removing the tree from its pot, shaking off loose soil, pruning the roots, and then replacing it in the pot with fresh soil.
